The Infinite Corridor, set alight

The Infinite Corridor, set alight If you hang around MIT long enough youll begin to notice some phenomena.  Pumpkins being dropped off tall buildings.  Pianos being dropped off short buildings.  Grumkins who haunt the hallways and who never see sunlight (also known as: grad students).  Shadowy midnight exploits that are best not written about on the blogs. Some of these phenomena can be written about on the blogs, though, and this is one of them. The central artery/highway/(insert metaphor/analogy/figurawhatever here hey, Im not a HASS major) on campus, the Infinite Corridor is an 825-foot-long (thats .16 miles, or 147 smoots, or 251 socialist feet) hallway that runs the entire length of MITs main buildings.  And a few days a year, the sun sets and aligns with the window in Lobby 7, sending light blazing along the shiny floors of the entire hallway. This phenomenon is known as MIThenge, after Stonehenge in England, and not to be confused with Mitt hedges, which was a commonly used debate tactic in the 2012 United States presidential election (spoiler alert: Barack Obama won). Intriguely, though science has progressed to the point where we can predict solar eclipses and ISS transits to the second, theres actually quite a bit of uncertainty with MIThenge.  The azimuth of the Sun is very well-known but the azimuth of the Infinite Corridor is less certain.  But  Alan Eliasen, an amateur astronomer in Colorado, appears to have one of the most accurate predictions of the event. And so, on November 10th 2012 at  04:19:53 PM EST, a growing crowd of people gathered on the stairwell outside the Virgil Elings Center for Theoretical Physics, eager to witness MIThenge.  And though there were some obstacles clouds, and a phenomenon known as obnoxious people who keep standing in the hallway and blocking everyones view even after being yelled at it was quite an event. If you missed MIThenge today not to worry!  Its predicted to happen again tomorrow,  2012-11-11 04:21:09 PM EST. Just head up to the third floor of Building 8. And speaking of phenomena did you know that Simmons Hall recently underwent massive derenovations, which transformed this gargantuan steel and glass sponge architectural wonder into two parallel brick buildings on the east side of campus? Well, now you know.

English Coursework Essay Example For Students

English Coursework Essay Charles dickens was born on the 7th February 1812, in Portsmouth. Charles was the second of 8 children and he lived a poor upbringing and he and his family struggled for money too keep them alive. Dickens was not rich enough too go to school as a youngster and taught himself everything he needed to succeed in life. At the age of 12 Dickens started his job in a factory pasting labels on the jars of thick polish, this was enough too pay for his familys rent, He then moved on to be a law clerk. Dickens never forgot his hard childhood and always involved this in his novels, he always wanted to get the point across about the poverty and danger in England at this time. However in 1932 Dickens luck was about to change he started to write stories and draw sketches about London life an they were a great success , he was asked to write some more due to great demand. Then in 1838 Dickens published what was going to be one of if not his finest stories Olivier Twist which was extremely popular not just in England but in America as the Americans demanded the different chapters off the story. The story Olivier Twist was directed at the poor lifestyle of the lower class people at the time, Dickens tried hard to get this across to the people reading his book. Dickens wanted to shock the readers and show what criminals were really like and to reveal the horrors and violence in the London slums In the 1800s there was a big difference between the upper and lower class people, the lower class people had such a hard life an the life expectance was very low. Olivier lived the same life as a lot of kids at that time, not knowing there mothers or father led to a life on the street or pick pocketing as Olivier is led to do form a young age.  There was a huge difference between certain people at this time e.g. men and woman. Woman at this time were the property of men, women rarely made money as this was down to the men to provide for the family. When Oliviers mum was having Olivier as a baby she was on the street, as she had no husband and this led to a bad childbirth an also sadly led to her death, this was because at this time there was no healthcare and also it was very rare for the lower class people to be able to be seen by a doctor. Dickens tries his hardest to try and get across the point about the bad life Olivier was living and also other people at this time, as dickens lived a bad childhood he tried so hard to involve the suffering in Oliviers life to try and get this into the minds of the higher class people so that the future could be better for people of this day. Olivier has a sad birth, as he is brought up into this world with no mother or father, and his birth is not a very pleasant one as the doctor does not care about the child being born but the money he will receive and also the nurse at the time was drunken. Dickens creates sympathy for Olivier and his mother at the start of chapter one by the setting of his birth, as his mother was found in a gutter in the street, and was then taken into a workhouse were his mother was seen too by a parish surgeon and also a local nurse who was drunken at the time, the setting however being better than most birth places at this time creates sympathy as it was not a pleasant way to be brought into the world . .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .postImageUrl , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:hover , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:visited , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:active { border:0!important; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:active , .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268 .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u41faf4029ee4eccec9f8d0a85a278268:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: After you my dear Alphonse by Shirley Jackson EssayAlthough It did not look like Olivier was going to live at first after having a bad childbirth but he was born into as quoted by dickens This world of sorrow and trouble, Dickens also quotes that Olivier was born On a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader he says this because he thinks that it does not matter because the birth of Olivier was something that would much rather be forgotten. Later on in Oliviers Birth in chapter one whilst Olivier is being born there is dialog between the nurse, the surgeon and Oliviers mother in this conversation Olivier struggling to survive as he struggles to breath and crys out loud, his mother goes on to say Let me see the child and die this creates a lot of sympathy because although Olivier has only just been born already he will not be able to see his mother because she is on the verge of dying. After Oliviers mother being with the new-born child she passes away, and also the doctor leaves the room to go away to dinner as if nothing had ever happened, the nurse if left to dress Olivier up in robes. Dickens then trys to create a feeling of depression by using sad descriptive writing. And he leaves the last sentence saying If he (Olivier) could have known that he was an orphan, left to the tender mercies of churchwardens and oversees, perhaps he would have cried the louder. In the chapter of Nancys death Dickens creates tension and a sense of horror he does this by using descriptive and active language which involves the reader in the storyline. In this chapter Bill Sikes is planning to kill Nancy after Nancy betrays Bill so in total anger He kills her and then flees the country. In this scene it includes Bill Sikes, Fagin and Nancy, Fagin does not know at the start that Sikes intends to kill Nancy and throughout the scene Fagin tries to restrain Sikes but does not succeed. Dickens at the start of the chapter Fagin says to Bill You wont be-too-Violent Bill? This shows tension between bill and Fagin and as there is no reply this shows that Bill really wanted to kill Nancy. As Bill enters Nancys room there is very descriptive writing such as Without one pause, or moments consideration; without once turning his head to the right or left this creates tension and excites the reader as to what happens. As the chapter moves on Bill and Fagin Enter to room in which Nancy is in and although she thinks that its a nice surprise to see him Bill now makes the act of killing her, Dickens still uses effective language and punctuation in example I-I wont scream or cry-not once hear me-speak to me-tell me what I have done Dickens includes the dashes to include more suspense and tension in the chapter. Then Bill Sikes kills Nancy with two blows to the head from a pistol which leaves a dent in Nancys head. Bill Sikes Is clearly shocked by what he has just done so Dickens explains this fully by saying Such preparations completed, he moved, backwards towards the door, Dickens Language and structure makes this chapter more effective.  In Conclusion I fink that Dickens writing in Olivier twist is very effective because Dickens writing enables the reader to get into the story an feel the feelings that Olivier is feeling in the play. Dickens defiantly gets his point across about the people of lower class suffering and people know realise that you should help less fortunate. I enjoyed the story because I liked Oliviers determination to live a better life and in the end he succeeds.

The Truth behind the Truth an Example by

The Truth behind the Truth What is actually the definition of truth? I have come across this question countless of times in my life. When I was young, I would hear grownups argue about it. When I started school, my teacher/s would reiterate that it is important that truth be told every time. When I attended college, we would also discuss this in philosophy class or when hanging out with friends. But, what is it actually? Need essay sample on "The Truth behind the Truth" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed The truth is that, the truth describes the way the world is (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). This means that the truth is an articulation of an individuals comprehension of the world according to his or her experiences of how the world actually goes (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). It may be described by arguing the following: First of all is by looking into the subjective truth versus the objective truth, which means that the truth may be realized if individuals were to base it upon emotions or subjectivity as against the rationale of the faculty of the mind or what is technically referred to as the truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). For example, one may say, the truth is that I really feel that I love him; this statement is the subjective truth, since it is true based on the persons current emotion (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). The same is true when a person says, the truth is that I think I already love him because of what he has shown me in the past few days; this statement is the objective truth since it is based upon the persons thoughts (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Second is by disputing relative and absolute truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). When one says, it is relatively true then the statement does not actually exhibit the truth since it signifies that it is not completely true (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). It becomes even more obvious that that is not the truth if one is to put that definition against the statement, it is the absolute truth since it suggests the complete truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Third is by scrutinizing what is provable and what is improvable (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). For example, if one says, the world is flat, one should not regard this as the truth not until he or she has proven this (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). If it is improvable then it can never be declared as truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Fourth is by examination, meaning is the stated truth testable or not (Rosen, n.d., n.p.)? Just like in countless experiments of experts, they never conclude that such is the truth unless they have already tested it (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). For example, if a scientist says that feeding bottles are cancerous, such cannot actually be regarded as the truth if the scientist have not actually tested his theory/assumption (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). He would either test this experiment of his or her on certain animals or observe human beings as his or her subject (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Fifth is by checking if it is evidenced-based or just faith-based (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). See, there are actually some people who are blinded by faith and so they regard some statements as truth basing only from their faith even if it is not backed up by evidence (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). For example, merely stating that there exists a God because I know so or because I feel so is only relatively true; however, if one says that there exists a God because He performed a miracle on me, He saved my life, etcetera then it may be said that such statement is an absolute truth because it is actually evidenced-based. Last but not least is by verifying it through experience (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Is it experienceable or non-experienceable (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). If it cannot actually be experienced then it does not signify that it is actually the truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). For example, if one says love hurts, this statement can never be true unless an experience verifies so (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). On a final note, it may be complicated to define the truth (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). However, there are ways on how to actually check/verify it (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). It is the truth if it is objective, absolute, provable, testable, evidenced-based, as well as, experienceable (Rosen, n.d., n.p.). Reference Rosen, N. J. (n.d.). The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence Profile

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence Profile Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence is one of Howard Gardners nine multiple intelligences. This intelligence involves how well an individual controls her body in terms of physical activity and/or fine motor skills. People who excel in this intelligence typically learn best by doing something physically as opposed to just reading and answering questions. Dancers, gymnasts, and athletes are among those that Gardner sees as having high kinesthetic intelligence. Background Gardner, a developmental psychologist  and Harvard University education professor, decades ago developed a theory that intelligence can be measured in many ways other than simple IQ tests. In his seminal 1983 book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences  and his update, Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons, Gardner laid out the theory that paper-and-pencil IQ tests are not the best ways to measure intelligence, which can include spatial, interpersonal, existential, musical and, of course, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.  Many students, however, do not perform to their best ability during pen and paper tests. While there are some students who function well in this environment, there are those who do not. Gardners theory unleashed a firestorm of controversy, with many in the scientific - and specifically psychological -community arguing that he was merely describing talents. Nevertheless, in the decades since he published his first book on the subject, Gardner has become a rock star in the education field, with literally thousands of schools taking up his theories. These theories are taught in nearly every education and teacher-certification program in the country. His theories have gained acceptance and popularity in education because they argue that all students can be smart or intelligent but in different ways. The Babe Ruth Theory Gardner  explained bodily-kinesthetic intelligence by describing the story of a young Babe Ruth. Ruth was playing catcher, although some accounts say he was just a spectator standing to the side, at St. Marys Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore. He was only 15 and laughing at a bumbling pitcher.  Brother Matthias Boutlier, a true mentor to Ruth, handed him the ball and asked if he thought he could do better. Of course, Ruth did. I felt a strange relationship between myself and that pitchers mound, Ruth later described in his autobiography. I felt, somehow, as if I had been born out there. Ruth, of course, went on to become one of sports historys greatest baseball players, and indeed, perhaps historys top athlete. Gardner argues that this kind of skill is not so much a talent as it is an intelligence. Control of bodily movement is localized in the motor cortex, Gardner says in Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, and  with each hemisphere dominant or controlling bodily movements. The evolution of body movements is an obvious advantage in the human species, suggested Gardner. This evolution follows a clear developmental schedule in children, is universal across cultures and thus satisfies the requirements of being considered an intelligence, he says. People Who Have  Kinesthetic Intelligence Gardners theory can be connected to differentiation in the classroom. In differentiation, teachers are encouraged to use different methods (audio, visual, tactile, etc)  to teach a concept. Using a variety of strategies is a challenge for educators who use different exercises and activities in order to find ways a student will learning a topic. Gardner defines intelligence as an ability to solve problems.  But, whatever you call it, certain types of people have a great intelligence or ability in the bodily-kinesthetic area, such as athletes, dancers, gymnasts, surgeons, sculptors, and carpenters. Furthermore, famous people who have displayed a high level of this kind of intelligence include former NBA player Michael Jordan, the late pop singer Michael Jackson, professional golfer Tiger Woods, former NHL hockey star Wayne Gretzky and Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton. These are clearly individuals who have been able to do extraordinary physical feats. Educational Applications   Gardner and many educators and proponents of his theories say there are ways to foster the growth of kinesthetic intelligence in students by offering the following in the classroom: including role-play activitiesusing manipulativescreating learning centers having students create models when appropriateacting out literature or readingsmaking a video presentation for the class All of these things require movement, rather than sitting at a desk and writing notes or taking paper-and-pencil tests. Conclusion Gardners bodily-kinesthetic intelligence theory says that even students who do not ace paper-and-pencil tests can still be considered intelligent. Athletes, dancers, football players, artists, and others can learn effectively in the classroom if teachers recognize their physical intelligence. Differentiating instruction for bodily-kinesthetic learners offers an effective means to reach these students who may well have bright futures in professions that require a talent for controlling body movements. Other students will benefit from the use of movement as well.

Information security guidelines for ABC Hospital Research Paper - 1

Information security guidelines for ABC Hospital - Research Paper Example However, information security policy is customized by company to company and department to department. Different factor that may influence to tailor the policy includes organization size, dependence on information systems, regulatory compliance and information classification scheme. For addressing all issues related to information security via a single policy is not possible, however, to cover all aspects related to information security, a set of information security policy document focusing on different group of employees within the organization is more suitable. This paper will discuss different factors that must be taken in to account when constructing and maintaining an information security policy. However, there are many methods available for constructing an information security policy, the initial step before adopting any one of the methods is to identify the current maturity level of the policy construction process within the organization. The outputs will be either no informa tion security policy development process in place or there is an extensive policy development process exists. Information security training and awareness is initially evaluated, as the determination of training requirements for the organization is required on the initial basis. Likewise, the training and awareness program is initiated by conducting interviews with key stakeholders and business owners. These training and awareness sessions are focused on identifying security and training requirements. Moreover, type of awareness and trainings are also identified, as requirements for a hospital will differ as compare to a health insurance company. Furthermore, there is a requirement of measuring current maturity among employees of the hospital for making the training and awareness session more precise and focused. If the current awareness and training maturity is measured, considerations for further improvement are

Explication of the global social issue mini documentary Research Paper

Explication of the global social issue mini documentary - Research Paper Example d in the Middle East as well as criticism that the war targets the Islam community whereby Islamic religion is practiced in the region (Felicity & David, 2004). The war in Afghanistan has been criticized for lack of strategic clarity and over-generalized objectives. Most war analysts believe that the US military administration may learn the significance of strategy from the movie â€Å"300:Rise of an Empire†., the US military department must identify the appreciation for tactical prowess and the insurgency and the significant role of multinational organizations provision of intelligence information (Brad, 2014). Understanding the financial impact of the military strategy on the war against terror has significant benefits, especially to military policy makers in the US and other nations. In this regard, the US military has implemented unique military strategies and limited terrorism fighting objects may annihilate terrorism and promote global peace. However, economics scholars have acknowledged the significance of technology, and adequate funding of the military in the war against terrorism adequate research on the significance of adequate war strategies has often been ignored (Soni, Robin & Janet, 2003). The main objectives of this research are to identify the correlation between adequate military strategies and war success based on the film â€Å"300:Rise of an Empire†. Additionally, the research will also seek to determine the application of the strategies learn in the film about the US war against terrorism. The United States government has initiated several policies in dealing with constantly increasing trade deficits. Recently the president announced that the government would improve the morale and productivity of its employees by maintaining the social safety net for the next twenty years, a step that strains the current and retired employees. Policy that ensures the stabilization of the trade debt through the aging of all baby boomers and individuals

Theories and Practice in Child Development

Theories and Practice in Child Development After reading the document produced by Tom Burkard and Tom Clelford, Cutting the Childrens Plan which gives an insight of why the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) should be scrapped. It states that the Statutory Framework EYFS which was launched in 2007 should be scrapped to save  £315 million. However the authors do not state which areas of the EYFS they want scrapped, which causes concern. The EYFS is a large framework for practice and assessment and is the umbrella under which all the children aged 0 5 years who receive care and education. It has been a great impact within the early years establishments as well as having influences of various theorists to support the childrens learning and development. Before thinking of scrapping the EYFS altogether the authors should consider looking through the framework and see what the positives and negatives are as some aspects of the EYFS dont work for some whereas other aspects are of great use. As it mentions in Pugh.G et al (2010:1 00) There are also those who think it goes too far and is too perspective. (Open Eye, 2007:2008). Within the document it is mentioned that the EYFS is an intrusive attempt to micro-manage all 0 5 childcare establishments as well as dictating best practice including parents. Within the EYFS it does not specify that the parents should do as they are told neither does it specify how practitioners should work with the children. Therefore Pugh.G et al (2010:105), states that It requires the practitioner to differentiate to understand each child as an individual and personalize the curriculum content to match their needs and interests. However practitioners should have an in depth knowledge of their key children, so that they can use the EYFS Framework to support and help plan opportunities and activities. These will then enhance childrens learning and encourage the individual childrens development in a way that will interest them. The EPPE Project (Sylva et al, 2004: Chapter 4) identified the importance of a form of interaction between children and adults, that they call sustained shared thinking in promoting childrens learning and development which is now as part of the EYFS. On the other hand working in partnership with parents is essential as it helps all children to achieve their full potential. As stated in The Times (2008), The EYFS is about responding to the individuality of each child, in the context of loving and secure relationships and creating a stimulating and enabling environment that will promote age appropriate experiences for learning and development. Furthermore, Nurse A.D (2007:73) states that Children can be said to prefer to learn through the enactive mode as their ability to represent images and use symbols is less well developed. In this Bruner agreed with Piaget that active, first hand experiences are an appropriate way to present new knowledge to young children. The document also questions whether the EYFS encourages good practice. According to Pugh.G et al (2010:105) we need to focus the curriculum on what is important for the children, the things that they need to be doing at this stage of their development. By looking at the research and practice the most important things are Being Social, Being Positive, Being a Communicator, Being Creative and Being Healthy and Safe (ECM:2003). By introducing reading and writing at an early stage it could be argued that it can lead to complications later on and also delaying phonic work, therefore the EYFS recommends that practitioners use their professional judgement with introducing phonics. On the other hand the authors are claiming that children who come from a less stimulating disadvantaged environment waste an entire year falling further behind their middle class peers in learning (e.g reading), whose parents generally know better than to delay reading instruction. This is not entirely true, Gaunt e (2010) clarifies that Parents with the support of the wider family, are childrens primary educators. What parents do at home with young children has the most impact on all aspects of their development social, emotional, intellectual and physical. Nevertheless it could be alleged that children who have strong home learning environments are ahead socially and intellectually by the age of three, which is continued into schooling. Bronfenbrenners ecological model of human development emphasises the role of the wider environment and the childrens interaction within it. Bronfenbrenner and Caci (1994) proposed that the environment was the main influence on childrens development. Bronfenbrenner produced systems which included the following Microsystems, Macrosystems and Exosystems. The following diagram illustrated below shows how these systems are interacted and impact on the childs learning and development. (Smith et al: 2003). Bronfenbrenner also led the Head Start programme in America which required helping disadvantaged children overcome their poor beginnings. The EYFS recognises the importance of the wider environment both in working in partnership with parents and the ethos of the EYFS, providing equality of care and education for all. Research has shown that good quality early education and care has wide ranging benefits for all children. Being provided across nurseries, reception classes, pre schools, childrens centres and childminders, it enhances social and cognitive skills and is of particular benefit to disadvantaged children (N.A: 2010). However other curriculums have also the quality input that the EYFS has, for example the High Scope Curriculum, Montessori etc. It could be argued that children who have an intellectually and physically stimulating environment will maintain a more complex network of synapses in the brain (Bee: 1997). These biological changes in nature can have implications for practice, the EYFS however has a variety of suitable activities planned for those at different ages and stages of development. This is a prime example of how nurture can influence nature. Additionally Bowlbys (1907 1990) research found that babies/children succeed if they receive care from one main caregiver which is usually the mother. They are also more likely to make secure attachments and then initially grow up into being well balanced adults. (OHagan et al: 1993). Therefore modern researchers have disputed the fact that only the mothers can perform this task (Smith et al: 1993), regardless the debate of working mothers, it still remains that the childrens emotional and cognitive development are best when there is that continuity of care available. When in care children under the age of 5 should each be allocated key workers so that children can form key attachments with this person, this is where secondary attachments are formed. The key person is a key to developing relationships with the children that are assigned to them as swell as sharing and collecting information by working in partnership with parents of the key children allocated. The EYFS reflects this by stating that Each child with early years care and education should be allocated a key person (EYFS: 2007). By having a key person allocated to the children it enables them to develop an attachment with the practitioner on a secure basis knowing that they can rely on the key person. Lastly the authors stipulate that despite the ambitions of the EYFS, childminders have not been able to see the practical effect of this. It could be argued that there is too much paperwork involved for them within the EYFS. However there is evidence that most childminders have developed knowledge and understanding of how to put the EYFS into practice and use it to identify, plan and provide foe individual childrens needs in their care. On the other hand many childminders have given up their jobs due to this and others who are thinking of this. On one forum a childminder writes her views on the EYFS Curriculum and how she feels about it which can be accessed on The childminder states: I, like many other childminders, gave up an enormous amount of personal time just to prepare for my Ofsted. I spent weeks compiling my Portfolio, cataloguing my Toys, books, games, puzzles and equipment; compiling cleaning rotas, putting together endless policies, parent information booklets, files for training, files for resource collections, working out a system for recording each childs development, the list goes on and on. I still cared about and loved the children, I still provided the caring environment, and I still try to help each of my little ones to blossom and flourish, to feel loved and cared for, to be aware of the needs and feelings of others and to know that each one is recognised as being unique and valuable. Yes it should be obligatory for childminders to attend relevant courses and keep up to date with current thinking and procedures, in order that they can prepare to do the job effectively, but the burden of delivering EYFS in a childminding setting is too much for many childminders, and this needs to be reviewed. Mrs R Richardson, Registered Childminder Therefore it could be argued that the EYFS should not be scrapped but reviewed again. Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association argues that We are receiving clear signals about the positives of the EYFS and recommend that the Government focuses on refining and improving the EYFS rather than introducing radical change.

Rutherford B. Hayes Essays -- essays research papers

Rutherford B. Hayes (19th president)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Rutherford Bichard Hayes was not a well know president. He was not president that had the opportunity to lead us through a war. He was not a president that would draw much attention to the public eye. He was however one of the presidents that had a great triumph over a major U.S. problem, economics and civil rights following a war. The United States was just coming out of the Civil War and was in need of a new president. They were in need of one that could lead them into a booming economic system, start the process of paying off the national debt, and show them the benefits of a nation-wide unification of the North and the South.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On October 4th 1822, Sophie Bichard Hayes gave birth to Rutherford Bichard Hayes. It registered its first loss during 1991 mainly due to its inability to adopt to the customer centric PC industry.Phase 1: Incremental Improvement After registering his first loss, in order to cope up with its large fixed & warranty costs the company had no option but to cut back the employees perks & worse made forced layoffs. Eventhough there were products and process before hand they were not fully exploited. By 1993 about 40,000 employees were terminated Phase 2: Process Reengineering Change in management took place during 1993, Lou Gerstner was appointed as the new CEO. He immediately began the Phase 2 ‘Proce ss Re-engineering'.He realized rather than break up the company he decided to turn it around by going to market as ‘One IBM' – a centralized model where individual divisions pulled into as larger business groups . By 1994 the 155 data centers were trimmed to 3 regional megacenters fed by 11 server farms . The systems development process was also reengineered thus enabling the company to focus intensely. The results were positive,by the end of year 1994 the company registered a profit of 5 billion USD on revenue of 64 billion USD.Gerstner strongly believed in Putting customer first. He made sure that Individual sales group was formed and spearheaded by experienced managers dedicated for supporting the customers Phase 3: Emerging Opportunity Gerstner soon realised that eventhough the company could be recovered from its current state, it may not gain its supremacy as Tech Giant, with its current Business model. He started to focus on ‘Emerging Opportunity' provided by the Internet. By 1995 he decided that the company would focus on e-business.E-business was projected as IBM's strategy vision . Enormous capital were invested in Internet Products and services & many aquistions were done, which helped the company to shift from software applications to middleware. The two major acquistions were Tivoli btought for 700 million USD and Lotus for 3. 5 billion USD Phase 4: Business Transformation By end of 1999 with its current business IBM's innovation process continued to be focused within silos of existing line.Gerstner wanted to change this and the concept of ‘Horizon' was developed where the current and emerging business opportunities was classified among three Horizons H1 – Mature Business H2 – Rapidly growing business H3 – Emerging business Each Horizon had different organizational and leadership model to cater its different needs. Reasons for failure IBM ignored its commitment to customers to provide efficient high quali ty technical and customer support, moreover they tried to compete in every product category which eventually made them as Jack of all trades and master of none.

A Parent s Refusal And The Decision Making Process

A Parent’s Refusal to Vaccinate By Michelle Whitley The word vaccinate tends to bring up controversy among parents in today’s society. For most parents vaccinating is a medical necessity when you are raising a child. Then there are a small percentage of parents who believe that vaccines are dangerous and refuse to have their children vaccinated. Why is that you might ask? There are many reasons a parent may decide not to vaccinate their children. It is not hard to find bad information on vaccines and their safety with the use of today’s technology. The internet is full of anti-vaccine websites along with all of the media attention to false claims about vaccine safety. The use of social media where parents post their â€Å"vaccine†¦show more content†¦By the age of 6 years a child will have received 49 doses of 14 vaccines and by the age of 18 years they will have received 69 doses of 16 vaccines as pointed out by National Vaccine information center. According to analyzed data from the 20 06 and 2013 American Academy of Pediatrics periodic surveys, a proportion of pediatricians encountering parents who refused their children’s vaccines in the last year rose significantly. During the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies Dr. Catherine Hough-Telford of the department of pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham reported that the percentage of parent refusals increased from 75% in 2006 to 87% in 2013, which is a 16% increase. Nationally, in 2013 surveys showed that 73% of the parents stated that the leading reason that they refused vaccines were concerns about the safety and believing that they are unnecessary. Many parents believe that the benefits of immunizations do not justify the risks that their children are exposed to. Then you have the risk of the vaccine itself such as pain, fever and the possibility of an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction can be as simple as an itchy rash or as severe as difficulty breathing or cardia c arrest that could lead to a child’s death (very rare). In a parent’s mind why risk their children’s well-being for a non-existent disease that has not been seen in 20-30 years. The

Gender Stereotypes And Gender Codes - 1754 Words

Essay #2 Evolution of Females in Film It is evident that over the course of time, the portrayal and depiction of females in film in regards to their acting roles has evolved. Film significantly influences how society perceive social norms, and gender roles. However, it appears as the roles of females in this platform are often depicted in the following categories: the lover, victims, and the revengeful women/the villain, which can also be known as the femme fatale character. These common roles that women actresses portray often re-emphasize stereotypes and gender codes in today’s American society by providing females with roles that often illustrate females as inferior to males. In this analysis, I will talk about how gender codes are†¦show more content†¦Kay wanted to be independent and was a teacher and she wanted to keep working and still be independent ,but it turned out to be the complete opposite of that. Kay was constantly being lied to by Michael. As Aaron Devor says in Gender Roles and behaviors â€Å"hence its popularity believed that the social position of females is biologically mandated to be intertwined with the care of children and a ‘natural’ dependency on men† (Devor 506). Kay was beside Michael as he traveled through his journey of crime. As Devor said women were dependent on their significant other, Kay’s character did not have autonomy over the life she was living anymore, eventually when they got married and had children she remained in her relationship mainly to protect and care for her children. Kay was being pushed out from being in control of her life and turned into living Michael s life of crime. Hence, the gender codes reflected in film at the time for females reflected the societal values of women caring for family, and being obedient, dependent and complaisant. The femme fatale role has been represented in film as an attractive and seductive female, that uses her physical attributes and charm to infatuate and enchant men and ultimately brings disaster to the life of the men who fall in love with her. This depiction of females, is a unique way of representing females given that the role breaks away from the initialShow MoreRelatedMedia, Youth And Culture : Application Of Theory1664 Words   |  7 PagesMedia, Youth and Culture Application of Theory to Culture Discuss the ways in which gender identities are constructed and expressed through media and popular cultures? Essay Communication and Thought

Question: Write an essay on "Communication and Thought". Answer: Introduction Excellent communication skills are the gateway to success in professional as well as personal life of an individual. If a message is not communicated effectively, it can turn into a misunderstanding, which can prove to be disastrous for the sender of the message as well as the one who is receiving it (Hasson 2015). Effective communication is when we deliver our messages to the person or group intended as clearly and articulately as we can through interpersonal communication skills like skills like listening, feedback and questioning. We can consider the process of communication a successful one, only when there is no dispute regarding the understanding of the message between the sender and receiver of the message. If an individual is unable to communicate properly, he is bound to face issues in his professional as well as personal life. The importance of good communication skills is of utmost importance irrespective of the discipline or field an individual is involved in. Effective communication skills are specifically required in the field of accountancy. This is due to the portfolio of tasks that an accountant is responsible for carrying out like sending emails, drafting letters, preparation of interpretations, footnotes, and reports. The accountants of a company are also expected to coordinate activities with the creditors, debtors, banks, clients and other associations. Hence, it is crucial for the people hailing from the field of accountancy, to have extraordinary interpersonal communication skills to exceed in their profession(Chaterjee 2013). There is a preconceived notion among a section of the people who are of the opinion that communication skills are not that significant for an accountant since he only deals with number all day. This does not hold true because the profession of accounting requires looking beyond the periphery of numbers, sending and receiving information to and from his clients and associates. There are situations when the accounting professionals have to communicate about the outcomes and transformations related to the statements of finance, or when they need to produce various forms of interpretations and notes to their clients. Therefore, this requires effective interpersonal communication skills like listening, feedback and questioning on the part of the accounting professional, failing which will lead to a bad impression on his colleagues as well as his superiors(Sutton et al. 2012). Listening is often mistaken for a simple task because of its passive nature, but it requires more than just the capability to take in the message coming from another person (Brownwell 2015). Listening to a message will do no good unless the receiver of the message understands it. If there is any ambiguity related to the understanding of the message, it will not result in an articulate feedback from the receiver. If an accounting professional listens to his clients properly, he will be able to carry out his responsibility pertaining to making of reports, interpretations, and ledgers. Even a small mistake on the part of the accounting professional can lead to huge complications, which can impede with the companys operations and result in a bad reputation. It is of utmost significance for the accounting professionals to be active listeners, as they need to understand the issues and briefs given by the management, its clients, banks and various other associates(Hasson 2015). As the profession technically deals with numbers, any misinterpretations pertaining to the briefs given by the people who deal with the accountants professionally can have adverse effects on the overall functioning of the business. Questioning is also a part of the interpersonal communication skills. It is the key to gain knowledge, solving ambiguities and misunderstandings and carving out solutions to problems in a business organization (Sullins et al. 2015).Questioning does not simply mean making queries. The right questions need to be asked for an effective communication process. The accounting professional requires mastering the art of asking effective questions so that there are no misunderstandings and misinterpretations regarding his work. He will be able to gather more information and new knowledge and will be capable enough to deliver his responsibilities successfully. The accounting professionals are liable to banks, clients, investors and various other associates for the financial statements that they prepare. If there is any confusion regarding the instructions given by them to the accounting professional, he might not be able to prepare accurate reports and statements. Thus, he needs to be open about any perplexity relating to the task that is given to him. This will enable him to clear out any confusion and the deliverance of his job in a smooth and efficient manner. If an accountancy professional asks intelligent questions to his clients, it will create a responsible image in their minds( Hassall et al. 2015). For, they will perceive him as a person who knows what is to be done and is interested and careful towards his work. An accountant with a complacent attitude will not be interested in asking questions contrary to a serious one who will not tolerate any inaccuracy in his reports, statements, and interpretations. One-way communication is redundant and of no use at all. Lack of feedback implies that the sender of the message was not able to frame the message in a comprehensible way for the listener to understand. It is important to be aware of the attitude and the social background of the receiver to communicate effectively. There is a huge need for feedback for the smooth functioning of any business organization. The accountants in a company need to give their feedback pertaining to anything related to their job so that the management takes their decisions accordingly. For this, the feedback by the accountants should make sense and be understood by the management. Otherwise, the whole process can prove to be futile. The investors often want to know from the accounting professionals, how a business is doing financially, in which areas it is performing well and where are the probable loopholes. The accountancy professionals need to give them the adequate feedback for their queries so that they are contended about their money being in the right hands( Chandrasekaran 2013). The accounting professional needs to come out clear in cases of confusion regarding the payment of taxes, and other financial requirements. He must provide proper feed back to his clients, associates and superiors, which include the government, bank, customers, investors, and shareholders(Eswaran and gastpar 2013). The communication pertaining to finance should be done face to face or through written documents as conversations over the phone can often lead to misinterpretations and confusion. The feedback provided by the accounting professionals should be comprehensible and articulate enough for the clients and other associates to understand. Conclusion Communication is critical to the success of any business organization. Any activity that takes place in a work place is the result of communication. Therefore, suitable interpersonal communication skills is a must for any individual aspiring to touch the heights of success in his professional life. Accountancy deals with numbers and numbers can be perplexing. Thus, it is imperative for the accounting professionals to effectively communicate with the people who are professionally involved with him so that there are no complications regarding the deliverance of his job. An accounting professional who is serious towards his work will clear out all the confusion that might appear in the course of his job through effective interpersonal communication skills like listening, feedback and questioning. The Scarlet Letter Essay Essays - English-language Films

The Scarlet Letter Essay The Scarlet Letter Essay "But (Hester) is not the protagonist; the chief actor, and the tragedy of The Scarlet Letter is not her tragedy, but Dimmesdales. He it was whom the sorrows of death encompassed..... His public confession is one of the noblest climaxes of tragic literature." This statement by Randall Stewart does not contain the same ideas that I believed were contained within The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I, on the contrary to Stewart's statement, think Dimmesdale is a coward and a hypocrite. Worse, he is a self-confessed coward and hypocrite. He knows what he has to do to still the voice of his conscience and make his peace with God. Throughout the entire story his confession remains an obstacle . While Hester is a relatively constant character, Dimmesdale is incredibly dynamic. From his fall with Hester, he moves, in steps, toward his public hint of sinning at the end of the novel. He tries to unburden himself of his sin by revealing it to his congregation, but somehow can never quite manage this. He is a typical diagnosis of a"wuss". To some extent, Dimmesdale's story is one of a single man tempted into the depths of the hormonal world. This world, however, is a place where the society treats sexuality with ill grace. But his problem is enormously complicated by the fact of Hester's marriage (for him no technicality), and by his own image of himself as a cleric devoted to higher things. Unlike other young men, Dimmesdale cannot accept his loss of innocence and go on from there. He must struggle futilely to get back to where he was. Torn between the desire to confess and atone the cowardice which holds him back, Dimmesdale goes slightly mad. He takes up some morbid forms of penance-fasts and scourgings-but he can neither whip nor starve the sin from his soul. In his agony, he staggers to the pulpit to confess, but his words come out generalized, and meaningless declarations of guilt. The reverend seems to want to reveal himself, but Chillingworth's influence and his own shame are stronger than his weak conscience. Dimmesdale cannot surrender an identity which brings him the love and admiration of his parishioners. He is far too intent on his earthly image to willingly reveal his sin. Once Hester explains Chillingworth's plans, and thus breaks Chillingworth's spell, Dimmesdale begins to overcome him. He does it, though, in a way which brings him even more earthly glory. Thus, he never loses his cherished image, and consequently, is pushed down the "slippery slope" even further. I, unlike the community, think there is a problem with Dimmesdale. During his struggles to tell his parishioners the truth, they misunderstand his statements, he loses his faith, which is never completely regained. Dimmesdale's sin has eaten away at him, reducing him to a shriveling, pathetic creature. The only thing that brings him any strength is a re-affirmation of his sin with Hester, and the plot to escape the town (201): "It was the exhilarating effect-upon a prisoner just escaped from the dungeon of his own heart-of breathing the wild, free atmosphere of an unredeemed, unchristianized, lawless region." In short, fallen nature has set him free from his inner distress, but left him in an "unchristianized" world, a heathen world, damnation. He has given in to sin. He has, in effect, willingly agreed to commit more sins. Dimmesdale realizes he is doing this but is too much of a coward to admit his original sin to the public. He becomes a figure that no one can help but himself. Dimmesdale begins as a fallen man, falls farther, and near the end is, according to Mistress Hibbins, a servant of the devil (242). Hibbins' words, however, should not be taken lightly. She seems to be one of the only characters who shows herself to have a mouth of truth. Dimmesdale attempts to recover, though, with a massive effort, when he ascends the scaffold with Hester and Pearl. When Chillingworth exclaims, "Thou hast escaped me!" (256), he is speaking not only for himself, but for Evil. Dimmesdale has at least escaped damnation. He makes another small step forward when Pearl kisses him. "A spell was broken" (256). The redeeming angel has pulled Dimmesdale clear of the shadow of sin but not away from its' presence. After the kiss, Dimmesdale returns to speaking of God as merciful, and returns to praising Him. He claims, "Had either of these agonies [Chillingworth's influence and the "burning torture upon his breast"] been wanting, I had been lost for ever!" (257). He
